The trip to Italy was simply wonderful. I had no idea it was going to be so fascinating, extensive and privileged.

Italian Gardens – Further Details

Tutors
The trip will be led by Charlie Winton and Alys Fowler. Charlie has lived in Italy and taught for AHA for many years. She specializes in the Italian Renaissance. Alys trained at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, The Royal Horticultural Society and the New York Botanical Gardens. Here she studied horticulture, going on many botanical expeditions including the Mediterranean flora. She currently works as a presenter for the BBC and has written several books. In Alys' own words "I am very excited about the wildflowers, trees and shrubs that we will see on this trip. Expect to get down on your hands and knees and see wild orchids (and I promise you that seeing an Italian man orchid close up is quite the experience).
Hotels
We have chosen four star hotels which capture the spirit of this trip; charming and beautiful. We spend two nights in Fiesole at the Villa Fiesole. Near Siena we shall stay two nights at Borgo Pretale, a lovingly converted medieval hamlet where we will be given the tower with our own sitting room on the top floor. We will then move on to Lucca for three nights where we stay at the San Luca Palace, a 16th century palazzo.
Transport
We will travel in comfort in a private coach with air-conditioning. Due to the nature of the trip there is quite a lot of travelling. We have endeavored to keep the travelling time to the minimum with the average drive being 30 minutes, however the longest stretch from Cetinale to Lucca is around 2 hours.
Cost
The price is £1990 for 7 nights, including all lunches, accommodation and breakfast, wine tasting at Poggio Torselli, all transport within Italy and all entry fees. Single occupancy hotel supplement £220.00. Flights and insurance are not included. Dinners are not included by no means compulsory for those who wish to have a quiet evening. Numbers will be limited to 16.
Private visits include:
Villa Medici at Fiesole Castello di Celsa with lunch
Villa Pietra Villa Grabau with lunch
Villa Massei Poggio Torselli with lunch and wine tasting
La Foce
