"AHA courses are much better than A level History of Art as a preparation for university work. Exposure to real paintings, sculpture and buildings develops visual alertness. Seeing art in the cities where it was made reveals how it was shaped by its cultural context. Students from AHA have been made aware of many of the problems and excitements of academic Art History before they begin their BA."

Short Bespoke Weekend Trips

Short Bespoke Weekend Trips.

CASE STUDY: The 'Maneaters', an amateur football team, made up of London based arty types arranged an overseas tour to play an amateur Roman side, and we got everything in place for them. Their captain had this to say;

"The Tour was superb. As you'd promised it would be. Let's start with the hotel. It was spot on. Bang in the centre of everything. 50 metres from our 'home from home' bar on the corner of the block. And within easy walking distance to the sights. Having it to ourselves was also perfect...it meant we could all walk in and out of each others rooms and feel more of a family whilst away. Breakfast was a bonus for those of us that made it!!! I even managed a six mile run on the first morning. Running up to the river and descending onto the cyclepath that runs along side the river. So peaceful away from roads, the only traffic down there being a single skulls rower and a pair of swans. [AHA tutor] Steve had taken care of us on the first night. Hitting the Campo dei Fiori. And the cracking Pork Sandwich bar on the corner for our first evening meal!!! Before getting down to serious sport of drinking. (Poloroid taken by one of those indian fellas attached). Friday was Rose's day [another AHA tutor]. And I hoped the boys wouldn't give her too tough a time. But right from the start (she joined us for breakfast) we hit it off. And by the time we'd reached the Pantheon (pic attached) she had us eating out of the palm of her hand. Her enthusiasm and passion for Rome rubbed off. And the morning tour turned into a longer lasting all day affair. Interrupted by a fantastic lunch. Even the falling rain couldn't dampen our spirits as we stood in the queue for St.Peters in the afternoon. Rose was a star. If only she'd been available on the Saturday night she could've played for us. We had a spare kit. Very enjoyable and informative. A great day. Topped off by another fab meal just off the Pantheon sqaure. And more beers at the Campo dei Fiori. By now we'd started being able to walk home to the hotel with our eyes closed. Which was just as well. As the vision did get a little blurry at times. Saturday was Match day. But fired up by Rose's passion for history, we first had to conquer the rest of Rome. The Spanish Steps, the Trevi Foountain, and the Coliseum, followed by our own gladiatorial combat...the match. (Team pic attached) For a team of 47 year olds who play at most once a year, we put up a great fight for the first half. 1-0 up!!!! Then pegged back to 1-1 just before half time. Before being over run in the second half by much younger legs and going down 5-2. After more beer and pizzas with the opposition at the ground we held our farewell drink at our 'home bar' next to the hotel. And that was that. Our Roma Tour was over. But we'd laughed non-stop (so much we cried) and fell in love with Rome all the same time. So, thanks again, and please pass on our thanks for a great time to the rest of your team."
