The Southbank. The Festival of Britain and Modernism

festivalstamp

The Southbank holds one of the most fascinating arrays of architecture and sculpture.  Starting with the Royal Festival Hall we will learn about the 1951 Socialist Utopia that sprung up on the south side of the Thames.  Aching for spectacle and delight after the horrifying war years, the great Festival of Britain forced the country out of the gloom and into a bright more dynamic future.  The ROH is a building that needs close attention before realising how fundamentally important and impressive it is.

After lunch we will look at the extraordinary but somehow beautiful National Theatre, the Millennium Bridge (remembered in history as the wobbly one) and the wealth of intriguing public modernist sculpture that lines the south bank of the Thames.
