Venetian Colour - Bellini, Titian and Tintoretto
27th - 30th September 2012
Exploring Venice with AHA is a real eye-opener; we know where to find the secret hidden gems both artistically and gastronomically speaking. We can lead you away from the crushing crowds through the labyrinth of beautiful alleyways towards quiet but spectacular piazzas. The highlight of the trip must be the private evening viewing of San Marco, visited by thousands of tourists by day we will have it to ourselves at twilight, a truly unforgettable experience. Our tutors are also well versed in the nightlife Venice has to offer; from concerts and theatre to bars and clubs, we are there to advise whatever the mood.
The course will concentrate on Venetian painters and their remarkable use of colour. The majority of the works we visit are still in the churches for which they were commissioned, allowing one to have a better understanding of the meaning and power of the paintings. We will also delve into the unique environment of Venice which influenced the painters so deeply.
Medici Power and Patronage - A long weekend in Florence
21st - 24th June 2012

Florence can be an overpowering city when tackled alone; so full to the brim of wonderful things it is difficult to know which way to turn. Let AHA unlock her secrets and lead you to the more interesting and less crowded places. By following a theme with expert guidance it is possible to appreciate the city's complex history and unique achievements.
The course will concentrate on the powerful Medici family whose fascinating and dramatic story shaped the image of the city as it is today. We will discuss how the family dominated the political, social and religious events throughout the Florentine Renaissance as they fought to balance money and religion. We have the Medici to thank for the birth of modern banking as well as the commissioning of great artists such as Donatello, Michelangelo and Botticelli. We also have a private view up the scaffolding at Santa Croce to see the restoration of the frescoes close up.
Caravaggio - Devil and Genius - Rome and Naples
Rome 10th - 13th May 2012 and Naples extension 13th - 15th May 2012
Rarely do we have the chance to study one artist, to truly delve into their life, mind and works. What artist more intricate, fascinatingly dark, and intensely moving than Caravaggio. His genius is apparent in all his work; the intense beauty, the unflinching realism and the dramatic lighting. The devil in him was also omnipresent; reams of court script, assault, libel and murder. Yet was it this turbulent temper that fuelled the passion so evident in his painting?
We will study all that is behind Caravaggio; his childhood, his patrons, the Church, politics and life at the turn of the sixteenth century. We will look at how his radical painting technique and composition thrust their way into the Roman art scene and how his influence outlived his turbulent reputation. We will study his contemporaries and followers including Rubens, the Caracci brothers, Artemisia Gentilesschi and Bernini.
