The tour was a truly exceptional experience – both culturally, socially and gastronomically. You gave us such superb talks and were unstinting in your energy and time to make the group have a wonderful few days – perfect.

Venetian Colour – Bellini, Titian and Tintoretto

 27th - 30th September 2012

The Grand Canal

Exploring Venice with AHA is a real eye-opener; we know where to find the secret hidden gems both artistically and gastronomically speaking.  We can lead you away from the crushing crowds through the labyrinth of beautiful alleyways towards quiet but spectacular piazzas.  The highlight of the trip must be the private evening viewing of San Marco, visited by thousands of tourists by day we will have it to ourselves at twilight, a truly unforgettable experience.  Our tutors are also well versed in the nightlife Venice has to offer; from concerts and theatre to bars and clubs, we are there to advise whatever the mood.

The course will concentrate on Venetian painters and their remarkable use of colour.  The majority of the works we visit are still in the churches for which they were commissioned, allowing one to have a better understanding of the meaning and power of the paintings.  We will also delve into the unique environment of Venice which influenced the painters so deeply.

Itinerary

Thursday 27th Sepetmber

A sleek water taxi will greet us at the airport for a memorable ride up the Grande Canal to our hotel.  After a quick but delicious pasta with maybe a glass or two to oil the brain we will explore the streets and canals, discussing how the seemingly impossible was made possible with the history of this magical city and how it came to be.  We will have supper at a lively trattoria near the hotel, one of our favourites.

Friday 28th September

The morning will be spent in the Accademia discussing the merits of Venetian painting.  We will look at a handful of the best paintings by Bellini, Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese.  After a delicious lunch you may choose between a leisurely afternoon wandering freely with perhaps a spot of shopping or join us in search of Bellini at San Giovanni Crisostomo and a peek at the hidden jewel of Santa Maria dei Miracoli.  After a pit stop we will meet up to visit San Marco for our private view.  The feeling of awe and tingling as the custodian slowly illuminates the mosaics in the silence is indescribable.  A late pizza at one of Venice's best kept secrets.

Saturday 29th Sepetmber

The Frari arguably contains one of Italy's best collection of paintings and sculpture still in sitù, including some stunning Titians and a Bellini.  Nearby at the Scuola di San Rocco we can indulge ourselves in a feast of Tintorettos.  A scrumptious lunch at a nearby haunt of the gondoliers.  The afternoon will be spent on a church crawl to include Titian at the Gesuiti and Bellini at the Madonna del Orto.  Supper at an excellent restaurant famed for its fresh seafood.

 Sunday 30th September

We will strat the day with Bellini at San Zaccaria; seeing his paintings in situ in the dim light of a church is unbeatable.  Here we can also peek into the flooded crypt where the marble columns rise out of the water.  We will see continue on to the little gem of the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni.  A last long lunch before heading off to the airport for our flight home.
