"AHA courses are much better than A level History of Art as a preparation for university work. Exposure to real paintings, sculpture and buildings develops visual alertness. Seeing art in the cities where it was made reveals how it was shaped by its cultural context. Students from AHA have been made aware of many of the problems and excitements of academic Art History before they begin their BA."

Victorian Eclectic Architecture

allsaints

Victorians, empowered with money and world-wide interests, shaped modern London and much of it is odd.  To understand why London can be so beautiful, you must join this day.

We will start with the Catholic Westminster Cathedral - a magnificent golden bolt from Byzantium.   Nearby is one of the greatest icons of London - the Palace of Westminster (or Houses of Parliament). Arguably the greatest example of the Gothic Revival movement we will study its exterior, the creation of Barry and the curious Pugin.  After lunch we will visit the hotch-potch Arts and Crafts church of All Saints Margaret Street by William Butterfield.  Lastly Leighton House, home of the great painter and patron, Frederick Lord Leighton, who pays homage to the glories of the East.

  • Meet where: The piazza of Westminster Cathedral, 42 Francis Street
  • Meet when: 10.30 or 11am
  • Fee: £76 per person including church and cathedral contributions, entrance to Leighton House and 2 x taxi
  • Suggested lunch venue: RIBA cafe.  Please talk to Rose for other options.
  • Days available: Monday and Wednesday-Saturday
  • Rose carries public liability insurance
