"AHA courses are much better than A level History of Art as a preparation for university work. Exposure to real paintings, sculpture and buildings develops visual alertness. Seeing art in the cities where it was made reveals how it was shaped by its cultural context. Students from AHA have been made aware of many of the problems and excitements of academic Art History before they begin their BA."
Professor John Onians
The School of World Art Studies, University of East Anglia
Who joins?

This is a course for 18 - 25 year olds. Most come from the UK and increasingly we see more graduates and students from USA, South Africa, Australia, Brazil, Holland and Germany.
Students come from every academic background which brings an essential mix to the atmosphere of the course. Chemists, historians, linguists all have something to offer and much to learn. This is a wonderful opportunity to turn a good mind into a cultivated mind with broad interests and sophisticated knowledge.
For those who have enjoyed a History of Art A Level or Degree, this is an opportunity to study art history as a real experience with tutors who will challenge your thinking.
Such first hand experience of art is a great stepping stone into the arts. Many of our alumni have progressed as academics at university, within conservation, the auction houses, publishing and the media.
The course, described elsewhere, is based on first hand study of art in tutorials which very much mimics study at university. Small groups of 10 or fewer ensure that every one can see and hear, but most importantly, everyone can join in discussions. Much as this course is structured, there is no exam. Instead this is a course of cultural adventure and thus perfect for those on the threshold of university, while being familiar to graduates
If you are going straight up to University after school, you can still enjoy the Gap Year experience by joining the Late Summer Gap Year Course which starts in August and finishes in time for the beginning of term. Such timing also makes this Late Summer Course appropriate also for those already at University.
