Day Trip to Meissen

23rd – 26th June 2022

*one space*

After our highly successful trip to Dresden in 2021, we are excited to be returning again this year. The Old Town centre is a true feat of engineering and determination, rebuilt entirely after WWII it is now a pleasure to explore. The city is full of treasures, from Old Masters such as Raphael, Titian, Vermeer and Rembrandt to the bejeweled splendours of the Green vaults. There will be a day trip along the River Elbe in a paddle steamer to see the porcelain factory in Meissen where we will have a private tour of the workshop and collection.

Our hotel is in the centre of the Old Town and has a lovely terrace overlooking the square and the Kreuzkirche. Dresden promises good food and wine, and along with fun company it will be a wonderful few days.

Itinerary

Thursday 23rd June
We will land in Berlin late morning and will take our coach to Dresden, stopping for lunch en route at Lübbenau, a pretty town on the River Spree. Once we have checked in to our hotel we will explore the Altstadt (Old Town), discussing the 18th century Kreuzkirche and Frauenkirche as we pass. We will finish with the remarkable ‘Procession of the Princes’, a 102 m mural entirely created out of Meissen porcelain. Supper will be at a great place we know near the hotel.

Friday 24th June
The morning will be spent in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister looking at the fine collection of Old Master Paintings including Raphael’s Sistine Madonna and works by Titian, Rembrandt, Jan van Eyck, Bellotto and Rosalba Carriera – the last two being the best collections of these two artists, and in the 18th Century, which is when Dresden was at its height.

We will have lunch within the gallery before visiting the excellent porcelain collection. Should you wish, you can then remain in the gallery to explore the any of the gallery’s collections further. Dinner will be in one of the trendy eateries in the Neustadt.

Saturday 25th June
We will take a paddle steamer along the River Elbe to Meissen, it is a very pleasant journey and there is a good café on board. On arrival we will visit the House of Meissen, here we will have a private guided tour of their rather grand museum and of the workshop where we will see live demonstrations. There is also a slightly dangerous shop. Lunch will be in the centre of Meissen and there will be time to explore the city further, including a visit to the majestic gothic cathedral with Richard before taking the train back to Dresden in time for supper.

Sunday 26th June
In the morning we hope to visit the Kupferstich Kabinett (Prints and Drawings) housed within Residenzschloss (Dresden Castle). This excellent collection includes works by Mantegna, Van Eyck, Holbein, Goya and Rembrandt to name but a few. However this visit will depend on what exhibition is on at the time. We will then delve in to the Historic Green Vault, home to a vast collection of treasures and itself a work of art. If time, we will also see the New Green Vault on the upper floors of the Castle. One last lunch in the centre before taking our coach to the airport for the flight home.
