Frans Hals

Westminster Quaker Meeting House and National Gallery

Coffee · Lecture · Lunch · Exhibition

15th November 2023

The corner of a mouth turns up, cheeks flush with colour, a hand gently raises – Frans Hals captures moments of 17th century life in his portraits while preserving the very vitality of his subjects. It is as though his portraits breathe. Hals presented a new style of portrait that showed sitters in a relaxed manner, often smiling and sometimes even bursting into laughter. One such example, The Laughing Cavalier (1624), will be on loan for the first-ever time from the Wallace Collection to join the first major Fran Hals retrospective in more than thirty years.

The lecture by Dr Richard Stemp will prepare you for the exhibition so that you can make the most of your time in the gallery and gain the greatest insight into the works. Please join us for lunch afterwards at a restaurant nearby.
