Dresden
and
Johannes Vermeer: On Reflection Exhibition

4th – 7th November 2021

*NOW FULL*

We have always wanted to spend time in Dresden and the exciting news of a Vermeer exhibition has spurred us on. The Old Town centre is a true feat of engineering and determination, rebuilt entirely after WWII it is now a pleasure to explore. The city is full of treasures, from Old Masters such as Raphael, Titian and Rembrandt, prints by Durer and Mantegna, to the bejeweled splendours of the Green vaults. There will be a day trip in a paddle steamer to see the porcelain factory in Meissen and of course an afternoon spent in the Vermeer exhibition.  Dresden promises good food and wine, and along with fun company it will be a wonderful few days.

Itinerary

Thursday 4th November
We will land in Berlin late morning and will take our coach to Dresden, stopping enroute for lunch. In the afternoon we will explore the Altstadt (Old Town), taking in the striking interiors of the 18th century Kreuzkirche and Frauenkirche with a quick ascent to the dome for wonderful views over the city. We will finish with the remarkable ‘Procession of the Princes’, a 102 m mural entirely created out of Meissen porcelain. Supper will be at a great place we know near the hotel.

Friday 5th November
The morning will be spent in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister looking at the fine collection of Old Master Paintings including Raphael’s Sistine Madonna and works by Titian, Correggio and Rembrandt, among others.

We will have lunch within the gallery before visiting the exhibition ‘Johannes Vermeer: On Reflection’. If time and energy allow, you can then explore the remarkable buildings which house the collection and any masterpieces you may have missed with Richard or venture off to look at the excellent porcelain collection. Dinner will be in the Altstadt.

Saturday 6th November
We will take a paddle steamer along the River Elba to Meissen, it is a very pleasant journey and there is a good café on board. On arrival we will visit the House of Meissen, here we will have a private guided tour of their rather grand museum and of the workshop where we will see live demonstrations. There is also a slightly dangerous shop. Lunch will be in the centre of Meissen and there will be time to explore the city further with Richard before taking the train back to Dresden in time for supper.

Sunday 7th November
In the morning we will visit the Kupferstich kabinett (Prints and Drawings) housed within Residenzschloss (Dresden Castle). This excellent collection includes works by Mantegna, Van Eyck, Holbein, Goya and Rembrandt to name but a few and there is an ever changing display of the prints on view to the public. We will then delve in to the Historic Green Vault, home to a vast collection of treasures and itself a work of art. If time, we will also see the New Green Vault on the upper floors of the Castle. One last lunch in the centre before taking our coach to the airport for the flight home.
