Peggy Guggenheim in London

Lecture by Dr Frankie Dytor

Linnean Society and Royal Academy of Arts

Coffee · Lecture · Lunch · Exhibition

2nd December 2026

In January 1938, American art patron Peggy Guggenheim opened her first London gallery, Guggenheim Jeune, on Cork Street, Mayfair. Over the following 18 months it became a dynamic centre for avant-garde art, showcasing radical developments by British and international artists.

The gallery marked a turning point in Guggenheim’s career, establishing her reputation as a visionary collector and providing a platform for artists whose work was then groundbreaking. She presented over 20 exhibitions, each revolutionary in its own way. This exhibition brings together key works from those pioneering shows by Eileen Agar, Salvador Dalí, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Piet Mondrian, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, and others.

The lecture by Frankie Dytor will prepare you for the exhibition so that you can make the most of your time in the gallery and gain the greatest insight into the works. Please join us for lunch afterwards at Il Vicolo.
