Lucian Freud: Drawing into Painting

Lecture by Dr Richard Stemp

St Anne’s Church, Soho and the National Portrait Gallery

Coffee · Lecture · Lunch · Exhibition

24th February 2026

Lucian Freud, one of Britain’s most influential figurative painters, is renowned for his unflinchingly honest portraits and nudes. His works combine meticulous realism with a psychological intensity that exposes the vulnerability and complexity of his sitters. Through thick, tactile brushwork and stark, intimate settings, Freud transformed the human figure into a site of raw emotional truth.

Join us for the UK’s first exhibition dedicated to Lucian Freud’s works on paper, featuring rare archival materials and pieces never displayed before. These works reveal Freud’s mastery of pen, pencil, ink, charcoal, and etching.

The lecture by Dr Richard Stemp will prepare you for the exhibition so that you can make the most of your time in the gallery and gain the greatest insight into the works. Please join us for lunch afterwards at Fumo.
