Francisco de Zurburán

Lecture by Dr Akemi Herráez Vossbrink

St Anne’s Church, Soho and the National Gallery

Coffee · Lecture · Lunch · Exhibition

6th May 2026

A towering figure in the history of Spanish art, Francisco de Zurbarán is celebrated for his striking paintings, which range from intimate still lifes to monumental altarpieces. Whatever the scale, his works consistently convey a profound sense of spiritual intensity, in a realist style influenced by Caravaggio and his followers.

Renowned for his remarkable powers of observation and his ability to render the material world with precision, Zurbarán’s canvases draw viewers into contemplative spaces where everyday objects are transformed through his disciplined brushwork. This exhibition, the first in the UK devoted to Zurbarán, brings together major works from collections around the globe, including rare still lifes by his son, Juan de Zurbarán.

The lecture will be given by Dr Akemi Herráez Vossbrink, a specialist on Zurbarán. Akemi has contributed to the forthcoming exhibition catalogue with her research on Zurbarán’s painting production for the Americas.

The lecture will prepare you for the exhibition so that you can make the most of your time in the gallery and gain the greatest insight into the works. Please join us for lunch afterwards at Fumo.
