William Morris
Walk with Joshua White
Guided Gallery Tour – Lunch
11th June 2026
William Morris Gallery holds the world’s largest collection of Morris’ works, as well as works by his contemporaries, including the Pre-Raphaelite artists. William Morris (1834-1896) was a “designer, craftsman, writer, social activist, and conservationist”, whose motifs have become iconic and instantly-recognisable patterns found in British interiors. Morris was instrumental in the championing of hand craftsmanship, combatting the rise of industrial mass-production in 19th-century Britain. Although best known for his textiles, furniture and stained glass are amongst his designs that are still manufactured today. We will walk through Water House (the building now home to the William Morris Gallery), where Morris lived from 1848 to 1856, discussing his works in relation to his life and the wider artistic climate of the time.
Joshua White will introduce us to Morris’ work, weaving in contextual information about Morris’ influences, including John Ruskin, Dante Gabriel Rosetti and Edward Burne-Jones. We will discuss the influence of the neo-gothic and medieval history and the early socialist movement on the formation of the arts and crafts movement, as well as the foundation of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. in 1861. This furnishing and decorative arts company was founded by Morris, Burne-Jones, Rossetti, Phillip Webb, Ford Madox Brown, Charles Faulkner, and Peter Paul Marshall. Now known as Morris & Co., this company has continued Morris’ legacy into the modern age.
