Catharina van Hemessen: Signature Works

Lecture by Dr Richard Stemp

St. Anne’s Church and The National Gallery

Coffee · Lecture · Lunch · Exhibition

24th March 2027

Join Dr Richard Stemp for an illuminating lecture exploring Catharina van Hemessen: Signature Works, the National Gallery’s  exhibition devoted to this pioneering 16th-century Flemish painter. At a time when few women worked as artists, van Hemessen boldly signed her paintings, leaving a remarkable legacy that allows us to recognise her work more than 450 years later, and this exhibition is the first in the UK to be dedicated to her works. Through an exploration of her exquisite small-scale paintings, Richard will shed light on the life and achievements of an artist who challenged expectations and claimed her place in art history. Together we will uncover the story behind her remarkable work and the significance of her enduring artistic signature.

Please join us after the lecture for lunch at Fumo before we go to see the artist’s masterpieces in person.
