Coffee · Lecture · Lunch · Exhibition
21st April 2027
Come to this engaging and insightful lecture by Joshua White to learn more about German Expressionism: Modern Painting 1900–1918, the major National Gallery exhibition bringing together the work of two groundbreaking artistic groups, Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter. Using his unique ability to bring art to life, Joshua will offer a fresh perspective on the artists, ideas and cultural forces that transformed painting in the early 20th century. Discover how a generation of bold, rebellious artists broke with tradition, using vivid colour, striking forms and raw emotion to express a rapidly changing world. From the bohemian streets of Dresden and Berlin to the landscapes surrounding Munich, explore the places and personalities that shaped this revolutionary movement, including influential artists Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter. Set against a backdrop of social change and the upheaval of the First World War, we will learn how German Expressionism challenged artistic conventions, redefined the possibilities of painting and left a lasting legacy on modern art.
