Monet: Painting Time
Lecture by Tom Parsons
Jerwood Space and Tate Modern
Coffee · Lecture · Lunch · Exhibition
11th May 2027
Join us for a fascinating lecture exploring Tate Modern’s first-ever exhibition devoted exclusively to Claude Monet, one of the most influential artists of the Impressionist movement. Tom Parsons will discuss how Tate has brought together remarkable paintings from across the world – including rarely seen works from private collections – to offer a fresh perspective on Monet’s extraordinary vision. Tom will explore how Monet responded to the transformations of modern life, from the rise of the railway and the changing rhythm of the city to the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. We will think about how Monet captured the passing of time through celebrated works such as Arrival of the Normandy Train, Gare Saint-Lazare and his evocative series of poplar trees, each revealing a different moment in the changing light. The lecture will also explore Monet’s lifelong fascination with nature, as the exhibition culminates in the magnificent Water Lilies paintings created in his beloved garden at Giverny. With Tom’s illuminating insights into the artist’s techniques, inspirations and ambitions, gain a deeper appreciation of how Monet transformed our understanding of painting, time and the natural world.
