Live and Online Lectures

We have designed a fascinating mix of lectures for December, all with a connection to winter festivities and Christmas – albeit some more loose than others! The aim is to brighten up the winter months with a bit of illumination. We invite you to sign in 15 minutes early to hear our news and future plans.  So please do join us with a festive drink before dinner and be entertained for an hour or so.

The Need for Speed

We are delighted to welcome back Rupert Isaacson to talk to us on how the invention of the thoroughbred horse, enclosures act and the East India company created Britishness as we know it.

Love it or hate it: Capitalism, the Establishment, the countryside; huntin’, shootin’ and fishin’, Brexit – there is a continuous historical line here that is useful to understand, and great fun to learn.

Starting with the fateful Battle of the Boyne, which established Protestantism and the City of London as the prime forces governing Britain, to the Enclosures Acts that established the countryside we so love today – but which created a divided nation – to the rise of racing, steeplechasing – and betting – as the ultimate expression of neck-or-nothing bravery, and its extension to the battlefields and brokerage houses of the world. This talk helps us to understand where we are now, as we look at becoming an island nation once more. Told through paintings, engravings and photographs from 1690 to the present day, join us on an adrenalin fuelled journey to understanding who we are.
