Southern India

We will begin in the tropical and intensely colourful Kerala. Hinduism, temples and decorations make up a large part of this tour, as does Christianity, contemporary art and ecology and the natural resources of India.  We are by the sea in Kochi and then up in a hill station, amongst the tea plantations in Munnar.  We will also visit Bengaluru, which is the fastest growing tech city in India; a capital with wonderful collections, textiles set amongst beautiful tree lined avenues.  And finally, we will go to Mysuru, which is a sort of

Bath of India, with an overwhelming Royal Palace and a school of painting unique to the city.  It is also where the warrior Sultan Tipu comes from, a name that conjures Tipu’s Tiger in the V&A.  We stop at roadside brick kilns and rural sugar beet refineries and the largest, most bustling silkworm market outside China.  When we speak of art in India, we do not often speak of an individual artist or architect, as we might in Europe, and beauty is not focused on disciplines as we might expect.  Instead, creativity, ingenuity, colour and design are everywhere, within everything.  We are interested in aspects of India, from art to architecture and sculpture, theatre, music and dance, as well as the landscape, ecology, food, the economy and all bound by a variety of faiths.
