Ancient India: Living Traditions

Lecture by Nicholas Ross

St. George’s Church and The British Museum

Coffee · Lecture · Lunch · Exhibition

20th August 2025

The British Museum has assembled items of such beauty in an important and groundbreaking way. The aim is to illustrate how Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism became art, creating a visual culture used by almost a quarter of the world, but little appreciated in the West. Given the growth of India economically, this exhibition could not be better timed. It’s a beautiful and wonderfully colourful exhibition and endearing too. Items have been displayed as living and religiously significant, so at the right height, surrounded by the right colours and in relation to other objects. At the very least this is courteous, but it is also groundbreaking.

In his lecture, Nick Ross will explain some of the religious background to Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, how they differ from one another and how they blend. He will explain some of the icons and what to look for and how images are intended to work. He will also compare and contrast to Christian imagery in order to build a bridge of comprehension.  Please join us for lunch afterwards at Chettinad Restaurant.
