Michaelina Wautier
Lecture by Dr Richard Stemp
Linnean Society and Royal Academy of Arts
Coffee · Lecture · Lunch · Exhibition
28th April 2026
Despite being recognized as one of the most important painters of the 17th century, Michaelina Wautier’s work was largely forgotten during the 18th century. Now rediscovered, her captivating paintings are reclaiming her place in art history alongside the Flemish Old Masters of her time. A pioneering figure in the Belgian art scene, Wautier challenged the societal limits imposed on women, producing works across genres, from still lifes and portraits to grand history paintings traditionally dominated by male contemporaries.
Following a hugely successful run at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, this exhibition now comes to London, offering visitors the chance to engage with Wautier’s remarkable oeuvre. Highlights include her celebrated series The Five Senses and her most famous painting, The Triumph of Bacchus, which features a striking self-portrait of Wautier as a Bacchante.
The lecture by Dr Richard Stemp will prepare you for the exhibition so that you can make the most of your time in the gallery and gain the greatest insight into the works. Please join us for lunch afterwards at Il Vicolo.
